Rosetta Institute of Biomedical Research

We offer a variety of workshops on molecular medicine for high-achieving high school and middle school students interested in pursuing careers in medicine or related fields, such as biomedical research, drug development, pharmacy or nursing.  Camps are offered in summer and winter and there are online and in-person options available.

Workshops are taught by PhD-level instructors with years of research and teaching experience. Through engaging lectures and hands-on laboratory classes, students learn normal molecular and cellular biology, and then learn how these normal processes are disrupted or distorted during the development of disease. In addition, there is a heavy emphasis on experimental design, modern drug development, and the emergence of the era of personalized medicine. To conclude the workshop, students use what they have learned to create an original research project on a gene or molecular process of their choice.  More broadly, workshop attendees strengthen their academic skills, build their college portfolio, and explore potential career options while making friends from around the world and experiencing college dorm life in a safe environment.

Our university-based workshops are held at UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, Columbia University, and University College London, and both residential and commuter options are available. University-based workshops include Molecular Neuroscience, Molecular Biology of Cancer, AI-Enhanced Bioinformatics, Developmental Biology, Molecular Biology of Aging, Molecular Immunology, and Bioinformatics of Cancer.  Biomedical Research – a workshop focused on learning modern molecular biology laboratory techniques, is taught at our lab in Alameda, CA.

Our online workshops include Introduction to Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Medicinal Chemistry and Medical Bioinformatics.  Intro to Cellular and Molecular Medicine is our entry-level workshop that is only two hours/day.  Students in the Medicinal Chemistry and Medical Bioinformatics workshops learn how to use online tools to analyze biochemical data.

Our program, specifically for high school students, provides an introduction to the fashion design process, from conception to garment completion. The curriculum is a taste of SFD’s adult Certificate program and is taught by our expert faculty. If you are interested in fashion and sewing as a hobby or are considering post-secondary fashion degree programs, this is the program for you!

Our curriculum is designed to take you from design to finished product with no prior experience necessary.  In the mornings, students in our sketching classrooms will create a mood board of inspiration and fashion plate illustrations of an original garment collection. Following a lunch break, students then go to our sewing and pattern making workrooms and create a fashion garment from a commercial pattern.

Students will learn:

  • How to take measurements

  • The safe and correct operation of an industrial sewing machine

  • Textiles and materials sourcing

  • Design development

  • Pattern manipulation

  • Sewing and garment construction skills

  • Design theory

  • Fashion terminology

  • Inspiration sourcing

  • Fashion garment sketching

“My daughter thoroughly enjoyed this summer’s class and had so many positive things to say about her experience at the School of Fashion Design. She wore her dress when we went to see Hamilton on Broadway a few weeks ago! Thank you for creating a stellar program for the young fashion enthusiasts in Boston.”

— Twyla, parent of 2023 summer participant

Our summer program explores topics in journalism, media, technology, arts, culture, sports, fashion, business and more. Courses are taught by reporters, editors and other industry experts who have an insider’s knowledge of the terrain and will guide you to out-of-the-way places and unique experiences.  We translate the knowledge and practices of The New York Times into educational experiences for diverse learners. We encourage analytical curiosity while helping students sharpen important life skills and values such as equity, critical thinking, information literacy and the pursuit of truth.
